Questions Frequently Asked Questions
  • 1- What are forwarding and carrying services?

In trade, to move goods from the seller to the buyer, intermediary transport companies are required, known as forwarders and carriers.

Carrier: Literally meaning “the one who carries,” carriers are transport companies that own their own vehicles. These companies are responsible for physically moving goods from origin to destination according to the contractually agreed method. A carrier can be either a natural person or a legal entity. After signing a contract with the shipper, carriers assume full responsibility for the transportation of the goods. Their responsibilities are governed by both domestic laws and international regulations. In Iran, most carriers operate via road transport; however, shipping lines, airlines, railways, and road transport companies can all function as carriers.

Forwarder: A forwarder is a person or company that acts as an intermediary between the buyer and the carrier. Essentially, the forwarder functions as a professional agent who, for a fee, plans and coordinates the shipment, selecting the best route and method for transporting the goods. The forwarder also handles all necessary documentation and administrative procedures. In general, the forwarder’s responsibility is to design and manage the logistics of the cargo transportation.

  • 2- What is the difference between a carrier and a forwarder?

Both carriers and forwarders are responsible for freight transportation; however, there are key differences between them, which are explained below:

    • A carrier is responsible for the physical transportation of goods, whereas a forwarder designs and plans the shipment process.

    • The carrier handles the actual movement of cargo from origin to destination, while the forwarder devises the route and logistics for cargo transfer.

    • All legal responsibilities related to the goods lie with the carrier.

    • Carrier companies own the vehicles required for transporting cargo, while forwarders do not have their own vehicles and must collaborate with carrier companies to move the freight.

    • The carrier’s level of responsibility is greater than that of the forwarder.

    • A forwarder is a specialized company in transportation services and can also act as a consultant to assist clients.
